10 Minute Tidy Office Tip 104: Coupons, Gift Cards, and Gift Certificates

Where do you keep all your coupons, gift cards, and gift certificates? Some of my clients remember having received a wonderful gift card or certificate but then they can’t find it. What I recommend is keeping the coupons, gift cards, and gift certificates that you are likely to use in the next week to month in your wallet or car. Now, before you put any of these in your car, be sure that you would have your car with you when you go to redeem them. If you would be taking your spouse’s car or the work vehicle instead, keep those items in your wallet.

If you have any coupons, gift cards, and gift certificates that you are not going to use in the next month, then create some central location where you can find all of them again. Perhaps this is a file folder in your Active Files. Or perhaps you want to keep them clipped to your bulletin board, file cabinet, or refrigerator if you have a home office. Be sure you don’t add clutter to your landing pad. Keep that clear for only the items you use daily.

As you sort through these items, be sure to look at the expiration date. Any that expire soon, put in your wallet. Coupons, gift cards, and gift certificates are like money and they deserve to be treated as money. They were valuable to receive and they will be even more fun to use, especially if it’s easy to find them whenever you want them!
